In response to the surging population demand for water, the construction of the Shing Mun pond began in 1933, and the residents of the pond were relocated to the new territories. The project was completed in 1936, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the accession of King George V, so it is also known as "Yinxi pond". During the Japanese occupation of the Second World War, a large number of trees were cut down in the Chengmen area. After the war, forests were replanted, including Pinus elliottii, mahogany, acacia, etc., which is one of the main forest planting areas in Hong Kong.
In 1971, the Hong Kong government allocated funds from the Sir David Trench Fund for recreation to set up a number of pilot outing recreational facilities, which are very popular among the public. Established in 1977, Chengmen country park is one of the first country parks in Hong Kong.
In addition, in order to cope with the traffic between Mobil, limousu and Kwai Chung and reduce the pressure of lion tunnel, the government specially built the Chengmen tunnel in February 1987, which was completed in April 1990.
