When King Wu of Zhou built Gaojing on the East Bank of fengshui, it was recorded in the book of songs · Daya · voice of King Wen: "King kobuwei, house is Gaojing". Fengjing is the location of the temple and the garden. It is the center for the king of Zhou to live and manage the state, which is called FengHao.

Historical evolution

FengHao site, the capital of the Western Zhou Dynasty, is located on both sides of the Fenghe River in Chang'an County, Shaanxi Province. Fengjing is in the West and Gaojing is in the East, with a total area of about 17 square kilometers. From the 12th century BC, when King Wen of Zhou built Fengyi and King Wu made Gaojing, to 770 BC, when Canrong conquered it, the Western Zhou Dynasty perished. In 350 years, FengHao was always the political, economic and cultural center of the Western Zhou Dynasty.

The field archaeological work in FengHao area began in 1930s. In the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), an archaeological investigation team led by Xu Xusheng and Su Bingqi of the history society of Beiping Research Institute first investigated the FengHao site.

In the thirty-two years of the Republic of China (1943), Shi zhangru and others from the Institute of history and language of the Central Research Institute conducted the second investigation on FengHao site.

On April 15, 1951, under the leadership of Su Bingqi, six members of the Shaanxi Provincial investigation and excavation group of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences set out from Beijing to Shaanxi, opening the prelude to the official excavation of FengHao site.

From 1977 to 1984, Fengxi team, Institute of archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences excavated four rammed earth building sites in keshengzhuang, Chang'an District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, and ten rammed earth sites were found around them, one of which is the largest, with a total area of 18269800 square meters, larger than that of fengzaojia group and zhaochen No.3 building sites excavated in Zhouyuan. In addition, drainage facilities were found near the base 4.

During 1983-1984, the archaeological team found more than 10 building sites in Guanzhuang village, Doumen Town, Xiaquan village brick factory and hualouzi of the Xizhou Dynasty, among which the No.5 palace building site located in hualouzi is of large scale and well arranged. In 1992, the pottery kiln of the Western Zhou Dynasty was found in fengximawang village. The handicraft workshop is an integral part of the urban site, which is of great significance to understand the overall picture of Fengxi site.

From March to may, 1997, in order to cooperate with the subject of "Xia Shang Zhou chronology project · research on the reign of King Wu", the FengHao site was excavated. This excavation covers an area of 120 square meters, 17 tombs in the Western Zhou Dynasty, 16 ash pits, 1 cellar and 1 house. There are many stratigraphic relationships among them, which are of great value to the "Xia Shang Zhou chronology project".

From February to December 2012, entrusted by Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of cultural relics and Xi'an Municipal Bureau of cultural relics, the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Shaanxi Provincial Institute of archaeology jointly undertook the survey and exploration project of the scope of FengHao site and the distribution of underground remains. The Fengjing site is in the charge of the third team of Shaanxi, Institute of archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Gaojing site is in the charge of Shaanxi Provincial Institute of archaeology.

Urban pattern

Plane layout

FengHao in the Western Zhou Dynasty is the first large-scale city with neat layout in Chinese history. It is located on both sides of Fenghe River in the southwest of Xi'an, with Fengjing in the West and Haojing in the East. Specifically, Fengjing is in Mawang town on the West Bank of Fenghe River, and Gaojing is in Doumen town on the East Bank of Fenghe river. Although FengHao's city wall has not been found after archaeological excavation, the specific scope of Fengjing and Haojing has been determined, which proves that Fengjing and Haojing are very close, in fact, a bridge is connected, and they are two different functional divisions of a city, which can be matched by FengHao.

Although FengHao's plane layout has not been confirmed by archaeology, it is the earliest and most complete record of Chinese urban plane layout, which is of great historical significance, because it has always guided the plane layout of Chinese capital and is regarded as the classic of Chinese capital plane layout. This is "Zhouli · KAOGONGJI".
