Historical evolution
Shanghai Zoo was originally a golf course. According to the memories of several old workers in the field, in the 26th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1900), the British Overseas Chinese opened the old Yutai horse house here, covering an area of more than 20 mu (1.33 hectares), and expanded to about 100 mu (6.67 hectares) during the Xuantong period (1909-1911). In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), eight British merchants, including Swire, Jardine and HSBC, purchased the land. In the fifth year of the Republic of China, a golf course Club (also known as Hongqiao ladle club course) was established. The land was expanded to about 150 mu (10 HA), and increased to 417 mu (27.8 HA) in 1930.
In June 1954, the general office of the State Council announced to the Shanghai Municipal People's government that an elephant dedicated to Chairman Mao Zedong by the Dai people of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, would be given to Shanghai for breeding and exhibition. So the idea of building the western suburb park as a zoo was put on the agenda. In July, the Municipal Public Works Bureau sent a group of engineering and technical personnel headed by Cheng XuKe, deputy director of the park management office, and zoo management personnel to Beijing Zoo to study, and invited sasnovsky, director of Moscow Zoo in Beijing, to discuss the park planning and related matters. In August, sasanovsky and leandrova, the veterinary director of Moscow Zoo, came to Shanghai to help survey the western suburb park, Longhua nursery, Huajing Changqiao Town, etc., and finally decided to expand the western suburb park into a zoo. The planned zoo integrates exhibition, production, scientific research and popular science, with a total area of 2000 mu (133.33 hectares). Zoo construction adopts the principle of comprehensive planning and phased construction. Before the zoo is completed, the original cultural rest park will be preserved, but no new facilities for mass cultural activities will be built.
On March 20, 1953, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the report of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal People's Government on recovering the golf course in Xinjing district. On June 12 of the same year, the Municipal Foreign Affairs Office met with the Municipal Public Works Bureau, the Municipal Real Estate Administration Bureau, the Municipal Labor Bureau and the Xinjing District Office of the Municipal Federation of trade unions to discuss matters related to the recovery of Hongqiao Golf Course. In July of the same year, the park management office of the Municipal Public Works Bureau purchased the buildings and other facilities of the golf course for 17000 yuan while recovering the golf course land according to law. In October of the same year, the Municipal Construction Committee decided to build a cultural rest park here. Xu Jingyou, the landscaping section of the garden management office, is responsible for the overall planning of the garden construction project. In October 1953, the office organized the construction. By May of the next year, green planting, roads, sewers, lighting and other supporting projects had been completed. Buildings such as bamboo structure gate, five curve corridor, octagonal ring corridor, double eaves air tower, hexagonal pavilion and small square Pavilion had been built, as well as skating rink and children's Park. The investment amount is 853300 yuan. On May 25, 1954, the park with an area of 421 mu (28.07 hectares) was opened to the public, named Xijiao park. In the first ten days of opening, the number of visitors per day reached 30000-150000, traffic jams outside the park and damage to flowers and trees in the park, so it was decided to suspend the opening on June 5. During this period, the Municipal Public Works Bureau, together with relevant departments, took some corresponding measures: to build a 12m wide garden gate and an 8m wide wooden bridge in the southeast of the garden; to build an additional 21 mu (1.4 HA) non motor vehicle parking lot outside the garden;
